A severe storm system swept across the Midwest and South on April 27-29, 2014, with heavy rains, hail and tornadoes, causing damage in at least 10 states. At least 31 people were killed by tornadoes in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Severe weather also caused damaging storms and tornado activity in North Carolina, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, and Georgia. Emergency crews are working to search for people missing after the storms, and assess damaged structures. FEMA is in contact with emergency managers in affected areas and has teams on the ground at numerous state emergency operations centers. Governors in Kansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Georgia have declared a state of emergency for affected areas. President Barack Obama approved a Federal Disaster Declaration for Arkansas on April 29.
