AC 2022 Breakout Session: Creating and Ideal System of Mental Health Care for Children and Families in Texas and Beyond

Publication date:

Child and youth mental health has reached a crisis point as the long term impacts of the pandemic are only just now beginning to be understood.  The key to successfully treating child and family mental health is to deploy screening, detection, and early interventions in the two places where America is best equipped to help children and families: at the family doctor and the local school. The challenge is that both pediatricians and educators have limited supports to detect and treat mental health needs early, and both are struggling to refer children and youth with more complex needs to overextended specialty care providers. Because of the challenges in accessing treatment, most families do not receive care until needs reach a crisis level and too many children and youth, particularly Black and Latino children and youth, first access mental health treatment in a juvenile justice facility or an emergency department. Please join experts from the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute to discuss how communities can rethink the organization of these systems to reach more children and youth where they are, provide care sooner, and build capacity for more effective service delivery. Grantmakers will learn: (1) an overview of the child mental health landscape, (2) best practices in addressing child and youth mental health, and (3) how public-private partnerships between philanthropy and governments can work to ensure children and youth receive care when and where they need it.
