At its regular quarterly meeting held on June 9, the Board of Directors of the Summerlee Foundation committed $714,485 for a total of 71 emergency operating grants to help bolster the many organizations in Texas dealing with Texas history who have suffered operating losses due to the effects of COVID-19 mandated shutdowns. According to Summerlee President Gary Smith, “We wanted to respond in a meaningful way to the historic losses suffered by the many organizations statewide, especially museums, forced to shut down this spring. Most had very similar stories: loss of admissions and school field trip revenue, loss of funding and sponsorships for special events, and cancellations of major fund-raising events and educational offerings. We know that many organizations will also face cutbacks from state, county and city support, and so we hope that our contributions may help some of these organizations survive.” Founded in 1989 by the late Annie Lee Roberts, the Summerlee Foundation is based in Dallas and makes grants in two areas: animal protection and Texas history.
