Investing in Native Communities Learning Journey
Investors have a unique opportunity to provide the long-term patient capital Native entrepreneurs need to stimulate economic development in Tribal communities, but investment remains woefully low. For example, less than 1% of grant dollars go to Native communities, despite them constituting between 1-2% of the nation’s population. Through a year-long learning circle with Foundations and Native leaders, Confluence unearthed two primary barriers to increased investment: 1) Perceived lack of deal flow in Native communities, and the need to stimulate enterprise to increase the supply of investment-ready deals, 2) The need for cross-cultural dialogue, with respectful inclusion of Native voices and values as a key component to creating viable investment approaches.
