Session 1: January 12-14, 2026 (Dallas, TX)
Phase 1 Training
Facilitated by:
	- The Racial Equity Institute (REI) is a national organization dedicated to helping communities and institutions address and eliminate systemic racism. Founded in 2012 by Deena Hayes-Greene and Suzanne Plihcik, REI focuses on transforming structures and systems rather than individual attitudes, emphasizing that racial inequity is deeply institutionalized and requires collective, long-term work to undo. Through research-based training, organizing, and capacity-building, REI equips organizations to recognize how power operates, build accountability structures, and advance sustainable racial equity rooted in justice and community transformation. Phase I is a foundational, two-day workshop designed to shift participants’ understanding of racism from individual prejudice to systemic, structural, and institutional dynamics. It presents a historical, cultural, and structural analysis using frameworks such as the “fish/lake/groundwater” metaphor, along with topics like implicit bias, markedness theory, institutional power structures, and the role of race in economic and policy history. By providing shared language and deeper insight into root causes, Phase I aims to equip participants and organizations to recognize inequities, align around a common analysis, and begin the work of systemic change.
