Investing in Community Resilience: A Conversation with Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust and Arizona State University’s Knowledge Exchange for Resilience
3:00 pm – 4:45 pm
The Hilton Scottsdale Resort & Villas
All communities experience stresses. They can be sudden shocks like floods and earthquakes, or they can be long-term, constant stresses such as access to affordable housing or healthcare. In each instance, how well the community survives the stress or shock–through proactive planning, nimble actions and openness to evolution–and how quickly it can bounce back is a measure of its resilience.
A recent $15 million grant from Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust has launched a new initiative—Arizona State University’s (ASU) Knowledge Exchange for Resilience—which aims to foster resilience in Maricopa County so that when a shock hits, people and communities can quickly rebound. ASU’s Knowledge Exchange for Resilience works to build community resilience by partnering with and studying the community up close, finding gaps in services, and collaborating cross-sector on solutions.
Learn more about this innovative initiative and why investing in community resilience is a top priority for PSW Member Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust at a panel discussion and audience Q&A with:
· Mary Jane Rynd, President and CEO, Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust
· Patricia Solis, PhD, Executive Director, ASU Knowledge Exchange for Resilience
· Nathan Smith, Community Engagement Director, Phoenix Rescue Mission
· Sandra Price, JD, PhD, Lecturer ASU School of Community Resources & Development
Mr. Smith and Dr. Price are two of the inaugural cohort of ASU Knowledge Exchange for Resilience Fellows—selected for their dedication to community and expertise in bridging community challenges with the research capacity of ASU to advance community resilience.
