Note: Private foundations are required to make charitable distributions of 5% or more of the value of their endowments using a three year rolling average in their calculations.  For example, a private foundation could make charitable contributions of 3% in year one, 5% in year two, and 7% in year three.  An increase in assets may outpace grantmaking in any one particular year.
